Introduction: [00:00:00] Welcome to the #PirateBroadcast™, where we interview #interestingpeople doing #interestingthings. Where you can expand your connections, your community, #kindnessiscool and #smilesarefree. Let’s get this party started.
Russ Johns: [00:00:10] We're going to have a party today. We got a party going on in the #PirateBroadcast and we're going to be talking about. What's the fab? What about the fab?
Angie Schuman: [00:00:20] Far from fab? It's not fab at all.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:00:24] That's the point?
Russ Johns: [00:00:25] Who we got? We got Tracie and Angie.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:00:27] We've got Tracie and Angie,
Angie Schuman: [00:00:29] Wisconsin in the house.
Russ Johns: [00:00:32] How are you two doing today?
Tracie Strunsee: [00:00:36] I feel a little weird being on this side of the microphone when I'm used to being behind the scenes.
Russ Johns: [00:00:40] No, I got to tell the backstory because not everybody knows what your role is because, Tracie, you are always...
Tracie Strunsee: [00:00:49] I think everyone knows by now.
Russ Johns: [00:00:51] Yeah, probably you've been mentioned more than once or twice.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:00:55] Just a couple. And I've only been on a couple of times. I'm not used to being a guest I've been on to talk about the #PirateSyndicate, but I'm not used to being an actual guest.
Russ Johns: [00:01:03] Yeah. The backstory is Angie introduced me to Tracie and Tracie has been producing the show ever since. And also you both have a podcast together that you're launching and producing for a little while now. So talk a little bit about that, Angie. So what's the podcast about?
Angie Schuman: [00:01:21] Our podcast is called Far From Fab and the whole point behind it is you can see us looking... like today, I have my hair and makeup done. It looks all nice and fabulous. But behind the scenes, you don't know that I have ripped sweatpants on and I dyed my hair yesterday because I just got my hair done and it was a little too red for my liking. So I bought this thing that's supposed to make it not red and it turned my hair almost blue. It's that kind of not fabulous things that you don't see...
Russ Johns: [00:02:02] when you're just doing stuff
Angie Schuman: [00:02:04] you see the Instagram curated posts, you see the Facebook live usually with a nice background and beautiful lighting, but you don't know, like I was going to save this story for our podcast, but I'll share it with the pirates because I've been here since the beginning and you all know me, right? Yeah. So this is the kind of thing we talk about on our podcast. The other day I went into work. I've been working for home from home for almost a year. I went into work and the last time I had to go into work, it killed my tailbone. I don't know if it's the chair. I don't know if it's just moving more, but, so what do I do? I have a can of the spray Biofreeze. And as I'm walking out the door, I thought, oh, I should spray that on my tailbone. I don't have anyone here to help me do that. So I just pull my pants back and sprayed it on. Oh my God guys. By the time I got to work, my rear was on fire and not like in a good she's on fire. It was, I highly suggest just not putting Biofreeze down your pants. That's the kind of thing that happens. And we all have things that happen like that. And so we just want to share with the world that things aren't perfect. You have days that you Biofreeze your butt and that's life.
Russ Johns: [00:03:44] That's the way it goes. Yeah. I have a similar story that you could probably relate to because everybody knows my mom. I took mom out to go shopping last night. It's five 30, so she wanted to go get a shot back. So I took her to ACE hardware down the street. We walk in there. We look at him, she looks at him again. She wonders is this, is it. Big enough, is it too small? It's I'm not sure you thinking is going to do operate the shot back.
Angie Schuman: [00:04:18] That's what I'm thinking. Like where did your mom get this idea that a shop vac is what she needed yesterday?
Russ Johns: [00:04:23] She wants one for the patio, so she obviously has plans, but I was just out there and then she wanted to go to the dollar store. She just wanted to go out and go shopping. And it's just those instances, those ideas, those events that you just, they're just normal events. And they have a special, unique gift with them and just watching her shop and everything else is Far From Fabulous. And it's really I just had to sit down and wait for her to go shopping it's life. It's life. It's life. What about you? Tracie you got any good events and activities that can beFar From Fab.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:05:01] The whole name of it is because of me.
Angie Schuman: [00:05:05] It's all her idea.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:05:07] Because my life is a comedy. No, I have I am never fabulous ever. I. I burned stuff. I break stuff. I trip over things. I walk into walls, fall over the bed all the time. I am a walking disaster and this is why I have a Far From Fab podcast. And I just happened to watch one of those videos where you have the hair person model typers and selling hair products that looks great. And she said I'm 40 and fabulous. I'm like, I'm in my forties and I'm Far From Fabulous. Go me!
Russ Johns: [00:05:45] So the next thing you know, you start a podcast.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:05:47] Yeah. So I just started thinking about all the stuff about how I was in a really low place because I'm dealing with this illness. I've been dealing with this illness for the last year and a half. And it was a very depressing place to be. And when I started at least feeling a little bit better, I'm never going to be completely better. But when I started feeling better, I just wanted to laugh. I wanted to joke about life. I said that it's Far From Fab. When being fabulous, just isn't your thing. That's who this podcast is for. People who just aren't fabulous, no matter how hard they try. And I just want it to be something relatable. I want it to be something that people could laugh at/with. I think in the first episode, we said, please laugh at us because we're laughing at ourselves all the time.
Angie Schuman: [00:06:36] We wouldn't tell these stories. If we were going to be offended that you were offended.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:06:44] Because life is ridiculous. It really is, so you have to just laugh at it because otherwise you'd cry. Sometimes because when things just don't go, right. and you're having a day and I've had a lot of days as things go wrong from beginning to end. And if I didn't laugh at it, it would just be depressing. And so I needed to come out of that dark place from dealing with this illness where I couldn't leave my house, I couldn't do anything. And I needed to do something that was for fun. And we only have four episodes of the show so far. And there was a long gap in between three and four because ...
Angie Schuman: [00:07:24] That in and of itself was a whole comedy of errors.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:07:26] Yes. You can not have a podcast called Far From Fab and expect anything to go right in your life ever.
Russ Johns: [00:07:34] Perfectly imperfect.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:07:36] I am perfectly imperfect in my perfection, as you would say, I got that from you, Russ.
Russ Johns: [00:07:43] So Adam's here in is so much different being a guest instead of a host producer. Absolutely. Adam, fantastic. Wendy. Wendy's here. Mom is a pirate. That's why she has plans for you. Did you hold her purse? Admiral? I held her purse. She's on oxygen. I got a card out. I moved around everything. I'm here to help. So being Far From Fabulous is fabulous. Namaste. Network and make all sorts of terrific energy. Jeff Young. I love you man. Howard Kaufman, the team. We're all you let's catch up. Howard. I got to catch up. So point Howard. Yeah. Howard, come on. I want to talk about, I want to talk a little bit about some of the things that you guys do behind the scenes, because you have encouraged me and coached me along the way, and you such an encourager. She's been so productive and prolific in her advice and it's really helped a lot. And Tracie, now that you've produced the show a little bit...
Angie Schuman: [00:08:50] when he takes it
Tracie Strunsee: [00:08:52] He didn't say he takes it. He said you've been prolific with it.
Angie Schuman: [00:08:58] Just cause I give good advice doesn't mean you have to take it
Russ Johns: [00:09:02] True. True. So can anyone relate to me? Can you give me, can you give me a hell, yes.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:09:11] Angie is a great coach.
Russ Johns: [00:09:13] Yeah. And the reality is that this show has evolved over the last almost three almost 400 episodes now and the reality is that it will continue to evolve and people like you two are the ones that make it real, make it authentic, make it approachable. And it's Far From Fabulous. It's perfectly imperfect. Like we talked about and the community is amazing. The pirate community has always been amazing. There's so many different people involved and engaged in that. And Tracie?
Tracie Strunsee: [00:09:47] Yes.
Russ Johns: [00:09:47] I want to talk to you because I want to get Angie's take on this while we're on the show is the idea of what it takes to be a great guest. And I want to hear both of your takes on what that looks like and what that sounds like.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:10:05] As I'm sitting here with no idea what I going to talk about.
Angie Schuman: [00:10:08] As a producer, what do you look for as a guest?
Russ Johns: [00:10:11] What do you appreciate as a producer?
Tracie Strunsee: [00:10:13] What we want mainly from the guests is we want a guest that knows why they want to be here. That first of all, that wants to be here, knows why they want it to be here. They have a message. They have something that they want to share. They want to add value in some way to the show. A guest that is prepared. meaning having anything that the producer needs in order to have a successful show or to promote the show successfully. You want to have guests who promote the show themselves. Because, and I did bad with this. It was just this morning, I was rushing to put out the links to everybody to watch. Yeah. It was really bad about it myself. Yeah.
Russ Johns: [00:10:53] Plumber sink always leaks, right?
Tracie Strunsee: [00:10:54] Yes, exactly. But we want them to share the link for the broadcast to their followers so that the message can expand to more people. You're on the show because you want to sell yourself, you want to sell either your product or your services or your message, whatever it is, and it doesn't help if nobody sees it.
Angie Schuman: [00:11:16] That's the thing I always say about this show is it's Russ' show. He's the captain of the ship, but any guest that's on the show. They need to use this as an opportunity to put their selves out there, where you have a podcast, you can share, you have a live video, you share, you even have a transcript that you can share. All of that is done for you. So the people that don't take advantage of it, that just come on the show and that's the last you hear from them. I don't understand that because this is a wealth of content. And that is what this whole thing is about, is creating content and being able to share who you are and what you do and show that you're legit. And this is a perfect platform to get your message out. Not Russ' message, no offense, but get your own message out there. You have a lot of stuff. You can take clips and share them. Everybody says something that is fabulous at some point in the show.
Russ Johns: [00:12:29] Yeah. Excellent. The reason for the show is to highlight other people. A lot of it is highlighting other people and their work and their effort in what they're doing. And so if you take advantage of that and you share it out, it increases in value.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:12:49] And we went to highlight more people. So I say we put out a challenge to all the pirates out there. Everybody has at least one person, one connection that they think is incredibly interesting and that other people should know, get to know. So for all the pirates that are listening, find us that person, that great guest that we all need to see and invite them on the show and have them contact Russ
Angie Schuman: [00:13:15] Tracie can put the link right in these show notes and. You can go there or tell your friends to go there and make and book right from that link. It's easy.
Russ Johns: [00:13:27] It's easy.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:13:28] Or it's easy just to contact Russ too, or me. We can do that. But I do want to put that out there is to know that like everybody that we have, our pirates are great. We have a great audience. We have great viewers that know a lot of great contacts and that's the whole point of networking is putting people together. And so if you have somebody that you think, wow, they'd be really great on the show, invite them on. Put them in contact with Russ so we can have some more people because we want a variety of people to be on the show. We're variety, because we are definitely different than what you usually have on.
Russ Johns: [00:14:03] But that's what makes this show exciting. That's what makes it different is unique. There are some shows, exactly what to expect. The same questions are going to get asked. The same content is going to be expanded on. The reason I like this format is that I get to highlight others. Doing amazing things in completely different areas for me, I have had, what is it? Singing bowl, yoga therapy. Yeah, billionaires, it's everything in between marketing, LinkedIn conversations and even worms. So it's amazing.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:14:44] I brought in Jason, who was wrongfully convicted, Jason Strong. I had him come on as a guest. I actually have, I have many wrongfully convicted individuals I could invite to be guest, but I don't want to have too much of the same thing. So I invited the one person that I know the best to come out and talk about that. But at least it was something a little bit different. The show is more informative than anything. It's informing people, how they can get in touch with these individuals. If that's somebody that they think can provide them a service that can add value to their life, we're introducing them to these people.
Russ Johns: [00:15:20] I love what Jeff says long before I was a pirate being on the show, which Jeff you're always walking back to the pirate too. So let's get you on again. I was a big fan of what Russ was doing. He inspired me. And that's so kind that's awesome. It's such a wonderful community. And the idea that we can actually share a little bit of kindness, we can share a positive attitude in a noisy world of not so nice things and especially this year. And it's really important for us to really get together as a community. And I think really put the thing out there that is going to inspire somebody to do something.
Angie Schuman: [00:15:58] A hundred percent, this show you can get collaboration and connection through conversation. And how perfect is that? That you can come on the show, meet 10, 50, a hundred other people from the show, and you can collaborate with them. You can have conversations and build relationships from this platform to so much more. It's exactly what the #PirateBroadcast™ is about. And I think some people don't realize that, that you can connect. Just look at you and Tracie. You two, Tracie's amazing and
Tracie Strunsee: [00:16:43] Of couse.
Angie Schuman: [00:16:45] She is. Yes. Russ will agree with that and you would have never, ever met if it wasn't for me.
Russ Johns: [00:16:52] Yeah. And that's the power of connection. Another thing here's Tamra, I'm thrilled to be a pirate, such a fun show and experience. And it's incredible. It's really nice to be able to do that. And then Cathi Spooner is here. Good morning. She's showing up on a regular basis. Cathi love that you're here. Thank you so much, Darleen. I actually was on a show with Gabriel the first time Darleen was ever on camera, I think. And now she's doing her own show and she's been on the show and she's a active participant in the pirate community. Kelly's here. Hello everyone. And it's really, this is what it's all about is this live streaming is active. It's engaging and it's really fun to be here. So I just really liked the idea of highlighting more people in a broad range of subjects.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:17:53] I tell people all the time, it's also just a very good way to start your day. It's a very positive way to start your day with the #kindnessiscool #smilesarefree. It's just a good message to start the day off with. It brightens up your mornings. And that's what's nice about you being in the morning and then you have our podcast, which is just is being a disaster all the time. It's the other end of it. If you woke up with #gratitude, you woke up thinking this is going to be a great day and then life happened and things went off the rails, then you listen to our podcast.
Angie Schuman: [00:18:29] Then you realize you're not alone. You're not alone.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:18:35] It's okay. We're a disaster all the time and yet life goes on. We are still moving ahead.
Russ Johns: [00:18:42] Still moving ahead. Absolutely positively. Darleen, love my pirate family. Love that. Thank you so much. I just think that there's so many opportunities people have right now to start a podcast to share these stories, because they're so relatable, they're just everyday things can be actually entertaining and encouraging, because right now everybody's working from home or a lot of us are working at home and we have this Isolation in place and we don't necessarily know what's going on in the rest of the world and having a Far From Fab podcast out there, talking about these things and sharing real life stories about how it's not necessarily ideal every single day is I think what a wonderful experience. So when's your next episode?
Tracie Strunsee: [00:19:38] Our last episode took us a month to record and it took me a week and a half to edit. Actually I would really like our next episode to be a live stream. I think we need to do that. The fans want to see us. Our fans want to see our faces and they want to see us. And I... we don't really actually have any fans. We're kidding about that. We have a few fans.
Angie Schuman: [00:20:03] We have a few fans. We're international!
Tracie Strunsee: [00:20:08] Our YouTube channel is in the description. It's in the YouTube description, for sure. It's not everywhere, but in the YouTube description is our you tube channel. And if you subscribe to that, when we go live, we only have about 25 subscribers to our YouTube channel because we actually haven't done a live stream yet. We did a fun thing on New Years that wasn't part of our actual podcast, but we haven't done a live stream podcast. And I think we should do that next.
Angie Schuman: [00:20:35] New Year's Eve was a prelaunch.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:20:38] Yeah. That was just, we have nothing to do on New Year's, so we're going to come talk to people on a channel with no subscribers.
Angie Schuman: [00:20:43] And one thing, like you said, Russ, where people are home now and they're missing that connection. Yes, you can connect to us because we're on the show today, but that's what the whole #PirateBroadcast™ is about is the #PirateSyndicate™. You don't have to know how to do this. You don't have to know how to go live. You don't have to know how do I get it on StreamYard and Facebook and Twitter? You don't have to know any of that. You book through the #PirateSyndicate™and Tracie and Russ take care of everything. That's what is amazing?
Russ Johns: [00:21:21] The social media, the podcast, the graphics, the artwork the branding.
Angie Schuman: [00:21:28] Yeah. So don't shy away from going live or having a presence. I think that if I was a realtor that I would want to hire the #PirateSyndicate™ because what a great way to get your face out there. And when people see you, you become more of an authority because they get to know you and they're going to come to you for the advice that they need. If they need a new restaurant, like if I was going to Arizona, what would I say? Russ, where should I go? Where's a good place to eat? Not Abuelo's. That's a whole nother story.
Russ Johns: [00:22:08] Another episode.
Angie Schuman: [00:22:10] That's another Far From Fab moment, but just saying if you were coming to Wisconsin. Well now, you know, Tracy and I, and you would say, where should I go in Wisconsin? We'd say Arizona.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:22:24] Yes, why are you here? It's cold here.
Angie Schuman: [00:22:27] Why are you here? Come back in two months when the pool is open.
Russ Johns: [00:22:34] The reality is we're all flying through the universe on the same rock and it's really exciting to me that we have an opportunity to connect. You guys are miles away, time zones away, two time zones away and we're having these conversations and helping others, encouraging others to actually do something amazing because we all have an opportunity to do that. And that's why you have to be a little bit of a pirate to just step out there and, sail away and do your thing. And I I applaud you both on the Far From Fab Podcast. I just really encourage you to continue to do it because it's an awesome podcast. And it's an awesome opportunity for people to learn more about just life in general.
Angie Schuman: [00:23:20] Not being fabulous. One of our taglines is we want you to embrace your inner hot mess, that kind of stuff at all.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:23:28] Yeah. Every podcast starts with the pre-roll always says, embrace your inner hot mess and join us. Because that is life. Most of the time you used to watch people on a podcast and they look like they have it all figured out. They've got it all. They all have it together. They know what's going on and we're just like, nope, don't have it figured out. We'll never have it figured out.
Russ Johns: [00:23:51] That's just how we started the show before we went live is what are we going to be talking about? It's don't worry. We'll talk about whatever we're talking about. It was perfectly imperfect. It's okay. I don't need to worry about what we're going to talk about. We just have a conversation the way I like to describe it is it's that conversation at the coffee shop, where you want to lean in. You're not in the conversation, but you want to lean in because it's, there's something interesting going on. That's the impact I want to leave with people is it's the conversation that you want to listen to.
Angie Schuman: [00:24:22] So you want people to be that creepy person at the coffee shop over hearing what you're saying.
Russ Johns: [00:24:31] It's not intentional.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:24:34] Angie and I have had some conversations I'm sure people would love to overhear.
Angie Schuman: [00:24:38] We have had conversations that people at a restaurant have said they wanted to leave the people they were with and come sit at our table.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:24:46] That has actually happened. True Story.
Russ Johns: [00:24:50] It's a perfect example. Perfect example. That's the conversation everybody wants to have.
Angie Schuman: [00:24:57] We're laughing because we know what that conversation was.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:25:02] So there was a lot of laughing going on and a couple people were just like, can we just come and join you? Because you guys are having way too much fun over there.
Russ Johns: [00:25:10] So much fun out there so much fun. And it's really about that's what life needs to be about. Having fun, enjoying it, not being perfect. Every single time, not being so tight up around the axle that you're not able to be comfortable around people.
Angie Schuman: [00:25:30] That's no way to live.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:25:33] It's a lot of pressure on people. And that's what I was seeing. I was laid up and unable to leave the house for about nine months before COVID even hit. So I was the expert social distance, or before it became a cool thing. Okay. I was doing it before it was cool.
Russ Johns: [00:25:50] I was social distancing before it was even cool.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:25:52] It is very difficult, especially when you're in a bad place that you start watching a lot of videos, you watch TV, you just, there's nothing. There's nothing for me to do. And all I saw was all these perfect people, because so many people decided to turn to social media in order to try to somehow make an income or make up for the lack of income they were getting during COVID. And so that's when you saw a lot more people doing YouTube videos and selling products and they always look fabulous and they act like their life is so perfect. And I was like, no, it's not. I can tell you right now. It's not because nobody's life is perfect. And so I really wanted to show the more imperfect side of life because it can actually be very depressing, especially when you are in a dark place when you're already struggling, to see how everybody else has it together and everybody else has it figured out and you don't. It can really screw with you mentally. It really can. And so I made it a point of saying, I want to have a show that is relatable to people that don't always have all the answers. I don't have it together and know that they are not alone. And that it's okay. And so that is the whole point of the show.
Angie Schuman: [00:27:03] Yes. No matter what you're going through, you are not alone.
Russ Johns: [00:27:07] I lost my background. Well, it's not far away.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:27:11] You look like you're just floating in space now. There you go. See, we are out of this world.
Russ Johns: [00:27:18] So Far From Fabulous and it's Tuesday.
Angie Schuman: [00:27:23] It had to happen. It had to happen.
Russ Johns: [00:27:25] I love you both. I thank you so much for being here. I really appreciate the fact that you guys are doing what you're doing, sharing what you're sharing and producing great episodes of Far From Fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing it. And whenever the next episode will come out, I encourage you to continue sharing that out. And then as pirates, you're always welcome to come back and be on the show and share things in the future. Let's keep this party moving.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:27:54] Popular demand. We'll see how this one goes and if the pirates demand it, we'll come back.
Russ Johns: [00:27:59] The pirates demand we want Far From Fab.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:28:03] Yeah. I can't say when the next show for sure will be, but all of our links to our Facebook page or Twitter, everything is down in the comments. So if you follow any of those things, you'll find us. You'll hear about us, but I would like to do a live stream next.
Russ Johns: [00:28:16] And as we mentioned earlier, The whole point of the #PirateBroadcast™ is to be shared, build authority, produce results. So be a guest, be a pirate, share this out, produce a little bit of impact that authority in your world. And also if you're too busy and too distracted and you don't want to deal with the technology, just let me know. We'll get you on the #PirateSyndicate and we'll produce the show. Tracie, and I will work with you to get you on, get your branding produced all of those things that you're not willing or able to do or want to do. And we'll just take care of the whole thing. So just show up, turn on the mic and we'll be golden.
Angie Schuman: [00:29:02] So that's all I did today.
Russ Johns: [00:29:04] Yeah, it was pretty simple, wasn't it?
Angie Schuman: [00:29:07] It was very simple. I didn't do anything. I used the link I logged in and tada!
Russ Johns: [00:29:13] Boom, here you are here. You are one episode later. You're just one episode away.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:29:19] I have to do all the work after this, though. So you can just go back about your day. You can just go on and do what you have to do today.
Russ Johns: [00:29:26] I'm going to book more guests from the #PirateSyndicate.
Angie Schuman: [00:29:30] Alright!
Tracie Strunsee: [00:29:31] Again, Pirates, bring us some good guests. Everybody think about a great person to be on the show and have them contact Russ or myself.
Angie Schuman: [00:29:40] Or even somebody that's struggling to get their message out there. We all have a message and this is a great platform to even get that started.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:29:49] We can have a contest. Whoever brings the most guests finally gets one of thoseRuss keeps telling us about.
Angie Schuman: [00:29:53] Finally, an eye patch.
Russ Johns: [00:29:56] Oh, the eyepatch saga. I suck at some things. Just to tell ya.
Angie Schuman: [00:30:01] You're just also Far From Fab.
Russ Johns: [00:30:03] I am so Far From Fab.
Angie Schuman: [00:30:05] Embrace it.
Tracie Strunsee: [00:30:05] You are fab and far from fab. You're everything. You're all that there is.
Russ Johns: [00:30:11] Thank you so much for being here. Angie and Tracie, love you both. Thank you everyone. And we do this because #kindnessiscool, #smilesarefree and you #enjoytheday. Take care. Don't go away.
